CEO Performance Reviews
CEO reviews can be a challenging process. They are touchy and nuanced and can easily get derailed, creating tension in important relationships. A lack of proper planning, inexperienced Board Chairs, low emotional intelligence when having key conversations and a “figure it out as we go” process are common complaints. CEOs are left wondering: Will I be supported or fired? How will this impact my bonus? And, most importantly, will the Board Chair be reasonable and look at the context when assessing how the company performed?
With over a decade Chairing CEO Forums and coaching CEOs, Natalie Michael met only one CEO who raved about their CEO review. Not surprisingly, they were a top performing CEO with nothing to fear, but they still felt trepidation each year when performance review time came around. This report aimed to address the question: What makes a highly effective CEO review? If we were to reimagine the CEO Review what would make it better for all?
